benign tumor that is small in size and mainly formed in creases and folds of skin like groin, neck and armpit, skin tags are usually painless and harmless. Also, known as acrochorda, they may also appear on your face, generally on your eyelids. Skin tags seen in the anal region are usually linked to Crohn’s disease. Mostly skin tags do not change their size and have either irregular or smooth surface. They are raised from our epidermis and remain attached to it via a stalk called peduncle. They have a fibrovascular core with fat cells at times that is covered by an epidermal layer. Eczema, clothing, jewelry or shaving can irritate these skin tags. As they are benign, they do not require medical care but cosmetic or aesthetic concerns and persistent irritation by clothes etc. may call for their removal. Though not present when we are born, skin tags’ frequency of appearance increases with advancing age. Twenty five percent of adults have skin tags. These are generally non cancerous.
