[4] Though hair masks are primarily oil based, there are a number of clay based hair masks. The type of mask that best suits your hair depends on your hair type. When the hair is coarse and the scalp is dry, you will need an oil-based hair mask. Clay-based hair masks are recommended for hair that is fine and soft and for oily scalp. Sweet almond, olive, coconut and sunflower oils are usually added to the oil-based hair masks. Kaolin, bentonite, rhassoul and babassou clays are some of the different types of clays found in the clay-based hair masks. [6] However, external hair care is not always effective if you are suffering from nutritional deficiency. You should eat right to promote hair growth. Usually slow hair growth, hair loss or hair breakage indicates deficiency of B vitamins, especially biotin, iron and zinc. In addition, washing hair with the right shampoo, applying a conditioner to retain the moisture in the tresses, rinsing with herbal rinses or apple cider vinegar and using the right brushing and styling techniques are essential for minimizing hair damage and maintaining the health of the scalp and hair. Hair masks containing a mixture of oils are usually applied once a week. Masks with nutrient rich oils such as argan and coconut oils are known to repair and nourish the hair. [7]

Do You Apply A Hair Mask To Wet Or Dry Hair ?

It is a common practice to apply hair masks to dry hair. Warming hair masks that are mixture of oils before application helps in intense conditioning. [8]However, applying hair mask on clean wet hair is also found to be effective in conditioning the hair. After applying the mask to the hair and scalp, for best result, wrap your head with a warm damp towel for thirty minutes. The heat eases penetration of the nourishing oils into the hair and scalp. [9]

How Long Do You Leave In A Hair Mask

It takes a longer time for the deep conditioning hair masks to penetrate the hair and scalp. A hair mask must be left on the scalp at least for 10 to 20 minutes. However, the longer it stays on your head the better is it for the health of your hair. [10] Although hair masks are usually left on the hair for at least half an hour, the nourishing hair masks can be allowed to sit on the hair overnight.
